Merzouga has a long and beautiful history that is written in the sand. Many years ago, before there were roads or cars, our village was a green oasis. It was a very important place for the nomadic tribes and the great camel caravans. These travelers walked for months across Africa, carrying gold, salt, and spices to faraway places like Timbuktu. They would stop here in Merzouga to rest, drink water, and share stories under the palm trees.

There is also a famous story about how our giant dunes were born. Local legend says that a long time ago, a wealthy family refused to help a poor woman and her child who were lost in the desert. To teach a lesson about kindness and hospitality, a great sandstorm came and covered their home with golden sand. Today, those same dunes, the Erg Chebbi, are what people travel from all over the world to see. For us locals, this story reminds us to always welcome our guests with an open heart and a warm smile.

When people dream of the Sahara, they are dreaming of Erg Chebbi. These are not just simple hills of sand; they are like giant, golden waves frozen in time. Some of these dunes reach over 150 meters high! As a local, I never get tired of watching the sand change its “dress” throughout the day. In the soft light of the morning, the sand is a pale yellow, but as the sun sets, the whole desert turns into a deep, fiery red. It is a sight that stays in your heart forever.

Because these dunes look so perfect and magical, they have become a favorite place for famous movie directors. When you walk here, you are walking on the same sand seen in big Hollywood movies like The Mummy, Gladiator, and John Wick.

For us who live here, Erg Chebbi is more than just a beautiful place for a movie; it is a must-see destination because of the peace you feel when you stand at the top. There is no noise, no phones, and no rush. It is just you and the endless golden horizon. If you visit Morocco, you have not truly seen the country until you have felt the warm sand of Erg Chebbi between your fingers.

The Merzouga Sahara is beautiful all year, but the weather can be very strong. To make sure you enjoy your trip, it is good to know what to expect from the sun and the stars.

The Golden Months (October to April): This is my favorite time to welcome guests. The sun is kind and warm during the day, usually around 20°C to 25°C. It is the perfect weather for riding camels or walking on the dunes without feeling too hot. The air is fresh, and the sky is a beautiful blue.

The Winter Nights (December to February): During these months, the sky is incredibly clear, perfect for seeing the Milky Way! The days are sunny and pleasant, but please remember that once the sun goes down, the desert gets very cold. Sometimes it can even reach 0°C. If you visit us, just bring a warm jacket and some cozy clothes for the evening, and you will be very comfortable.

The Summer Heat (July and August): In the middle of summer, the desert becomes very, very hot. Temperatures can go above 45°C. Because it is so hot, it is difficult to go outside during the day. For your comfort and safety, I usually suggest visiting during the cooler months so you can truly enjoy the beauty of the dunes.

One question I often get is:  Is it safe to visit Merzouga? My answer is always a big, warm  – Yes –

In our culture, guests are a gift. Our village is a very peaceful and safe place for everyone, including families, couples, and even people traveling alone. We are a small community, and we look after one another and our visitors like family.

To make sure you have the best time, here are a few simple tips from my heart to yours:

Drink Plenty of Water: The desert sun is very strong, even when it feels breezy. Keep a bottle of water with you to stay happy and healthy.

Protect Your Skin: The sun and the desert wind are powerful. I always suggest wearing sunscreen and a traditional headscarf, which we call a Cheche. It is the best way to keep the sun and sand away from your face.

Respect the Dunes: The Sahara is beautiful but very big. If you want to go deep into the dunes to explore, please always go with a local guide. We know the paths of the sand and can make sure you always find your way back home safely.

The journey to the desert is a beautiful adventure. As you leave the big cities behind, you will see the landscape change into the open, peaceful space of the Sahara. Here are the best ways to come and visit us:

By Bus (Supratours): Every day, there is a comfortable bus that comes directly to Merzouga from both Marrakech and Fes. It is a very easy and popular way to travel. You can sit back, relax, and watch the beautiful scenery pass by your window.

By Car or Private Taxi: If you like to move at your own pace, you can rent a car or hire a private taxi.

From Marrakech: The drive takes about 9 hours. I always suggest staying one night in Ouarzazate or the Dades Valley to rest. This way, you can enjoy the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” without rushing.

From Fes: This drive is about 7 hours. You will see the green Middle Atlas mountains and the famous Ziz Valley, which is full of thousands of palm trees.

By Air (The Quickest Way): If you want to save time, you can fly! The nearest airport is in Errachidia. It is a small, friendly airport only 2 hours away from Merzouga. You can also fly into Ouarzazate, which is about 5 hours away.

Discovering the Wonders of Merzouga

Merzouga is a place of many colors and many choices. Every traveler is different, and our village has something special for everyone.

If you love adventure, you can feel the wind in your face on a quad bike or a 4×4 tour across the black desert and the high dunes. If you love culture, you can visit the village of Khamlia to hear the beautiful Gnawa music or sit with a nomadic family for a cup of tea. Some people even come just to walk barefoot on the sand and feel the healing power of the desert sun.

There are many ways to see the Sahara, but my favorite way, the way my family has done it for generations, is by camel.

You will sleep in a traditional tent made of dark wool, with plenty of warm, cozy blankets to keep you snug. These camps use shared facilities, and they are the best way to feel like a real nomad under the vast Sahara sky.

The Luxury Desert Camp: If you want to enjoy the desert with the comforts of a hotel, this is the choice for you. These tents are large and beautiful, with a soft king-sized bed and your own private bathroom and hot shower. It is a wonderful way to feel pampered while being surrounded by the wild beauty of the dunes.

No matter which camp you choose, the evening is always the same: a delicious warm dinner, the sound of our drums around a campfire, and a million stars watching over you while you sleep.
